Things to Know

Transportation
Public Bus to downtown Oranjestad runs daily from 6 am through midnight. Pick up is next door in front of the Amsterdam Manor Resort. One way is $1.25. The busses operate Monday to Saturday, every half hour from 6 am to 6 pm, and every hour 6 pm to midnight. Sundays and holidays, every hour from 6 am to 6 pm, and every 2 hours 6 pm to midnight.

Taxis/Cabs may be caught in front of the lobby at The Aruban or many places around the island. Fares are flat rate, set by the government, so no meters are used. Sunday surcharge: $3; Holiday surcharge: $3; Minimum rate: $6; Hired rate: $40/hr.

Drinking Water
Aruba has pure, refreshing water, which is distilled in the world's second largest saltwater purification plant. The water is completely safe; you can drink it right from the tap.

Drinking/Gambling Age
The legal age for drinking and gambling is 18 years old. You might be asked for your ID so always have it with you.

Electrical System
The electrical voltage is 110 AC the same as in the United States and Canada.

Tipping
A service charge of 10-15% is usually included in the bill. A tip of 10-20% is appropriate depending on the service you received.

Currency
Aruba has its own currency since 1986, called the Aruban florin. The US dollar is accepted in Aruba.

Climate/Clothing
The island is always warm and humid yet, often has a breeze to keep you cool. Light and comfortable beach/vacation wear is recommended. It's always good to have one set of elegant clothing in case you decide to dine at one of the many upscale restaurants where no shorts or t-shirts are permitted.
